  On January 1, 2016, Japan established its Embassy in the Republic of Moldova, and the new Ambassador of Japan to Moldova H.E. Mr. Masanobu Yoshii arrived in Chisinau on August 25. He is the very first Ambassador of Japan with residence in Moldova.
  On September 6, Ambassador Yoshii presented his credentials from H.M. Emperor of Japan Akihito to H.E. Mr. Nicolae Timofti, President of the Republic of Moldova, and took up his duties as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Moldova.
