Message From Ambassador Masanobu Yoshii

September 2016

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the official website of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova. My name is Masanobu Yoshii and I have assumed the post of the first Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova with residence in Chisinau as of August 25, 2016.

Republic of Moldova is located close to the Black Sea, between Romania and Ukraine, and it is in fact just a bit smaller than Kyushu Island, one of the four main islands of Japanese archipelago. Moldova’s rich soil and gentle hilly terrain make it particularly suitable for growing grapes, and therefore wine-making has historically become one of the main industries of this country. These days, the reputation of Moldovan wine in Japan has been growing. I myself recently visited Cricova Winery in the suburbs of Chisinau and had a chance to enjoy the view of the vast fields of grapes and to visit the truly impressive underground wine cellars.

The Government of Japan has opened the long-awaited Embassy in Chisinau this very year when the Republic of Moldova celebrates the 25th Anniversary since the Proclamation of Independence. The inauguration reception of the Embassy of Japan in Chisinau on September 7 was attended by Mr. Motome Takisawa, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. The Government of Moldova has also opened the Embassy in Tokyo this year, and we consider that the relationship of our countries has entered a new stage.

Japan and Moldova have established their diplomatic relations in March 1992, and since then, they have continuously developed partner relationship based on shared fundamental values such as democracy, market economy and the rule of law. Japan has assisted and contributed to the economic development and welfare of Moldova in various fields including agriculture and healthcare. I am determined to make every effort to contribute to bilateral relations becoming stronger and closer than ever before.

Masanobu Yoshii
Ambassador of Japan to Moldova
