Ambassador Sumi Participated in Sakura Planting Ceremony in Botanical Garden

  On April 11 Ambassador Sumi and his wife participated in the Sakura Planting Ceremony, which was held in the botanical garden of the Kyiv National University, and planted 15 sakura trees together with the Rector of the University Leonid Huberskyi, Member of the Parliament of Ukraine Hanna Hopko, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Mykola Movchan and Miss Ukraine 2016 Oleksandra Kucherenko, who is enrolled at this university.

  During the ceremony, Ambassador Sumi explained that around 1 000 sakura trees are planned to be planted in different cities of Ukraine in close cooperation with JTI Ukraine. Furthermore, he spoke about the Sakura 2500 Campaign aiming at planting 2500 sakura trees in Ukraine in commemoration of the 25 anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and Ukraine.

  In turn, Leonid Huberskyi noted that 2017 was declared as the Year of Japan in Ukraine. He said it was a great honour to plant sakura trees, which are a symbol of Japan, in the University’s botanical garden, as an evidence of friendly relations between the two countries. He also conveyed hopes for further development of these good relations.
