Ambassador Sumi participated in Sakura Planting Ceremony in Lviv

  On April 20-21 Ambassador Sumi and his wife visited Lviv and planted 20 sakura trees in St. John Paul II Park together with the Lviv City Mayor and his family.
  During the ceremony, Ambassador Sumi explained that around 1 000 sakura trees are planned to be planted in different cities of Ukraine in close cooperation with JTI Ukraine. Furthermore, he spoke about the Sakura 2500 Campaign aiming at planting 2500 sakura trees in Ukraine in commemoration of the 25 anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and Ukraine. In turn, Mayor Sadovyi noted that 2017 was declared as the Year of Japan in Ukraine. He said he wished to see sakura trees blooming in this park which is very popular among local citizens and conveyed his expectations for further development of friendly relations between Japan and Ukraine.

  Furthermore, on the same day, Ambassador Sumi participated in a ceremony of planting 6 more sakura trees in the yard of the Lviv Regional State Administration together with the Head of Administration Oleh Synyutka. It was held as a local initiative in response to the call to support the “Sakura 2500 Campaign” and combined with Ambassador Sumi’s visit to Lviv. During the ceremony Oleh Synyutka said that he was happy to plant sakura trees which are a symbol of Japan as an evidence of friendly and cooperative relations between Japan and Ukraine. He also noted that Lviv citizens feel special affection for Japan.
