On July 29, opening ceremony of the mural painting created on the wall of the School No. 68 in Mariupol city of Donetsk region, was held as a part of the Year of Japan in Ukraine. Under this project, artist Kensuke Miyazaki, who visited Ukraine thanks to the cooperation by the UNHCR Ukraine (Ms. Etsuko Chida, Durable Solutions Officer is in charge with her initiative), created a wall painting together with some 200 internally displaced children living in Mariupol.
Mr. Miyazaki said in his greeting that inside the “Mitten” you could see the people of Ukraine wearing various national costumes, children who participated in painting the mural, sumo wrestler, samurai, and many others all gathered. “I would be happy if people enjoy this mural,” he said. From the Japanese embassy in Ukraine side, First secretary Tsutsui took part in the event. “This joint painting by children of Ukraine, IDPs, refugees, and children with disabilities is a symbol of peace, which is wonderful, but having peace in Mariupol we must remember that conflict continues in some parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This mural is a testimony of friendship between Japan and Ukraine,” diplomat said.
