On October 12, 2017 Ambassador Sumi and his wife visited Kharkiv and participated in the Sakura Planting Ceremony in Gorky Park together with the Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Yuliya Svitlychna and Kharkiv City Mayor Hennadii Kernes. This year, the “Sakura 2500 Campaign” is being held aiming to plant 2500 sakura trees around Ukraine in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Japan and Ukraine. In the framework of the above-mentioned campaign 80 sakura trees have been planted in Kharkiv.
During the ceremony Ambassador Sumi wished these sakura trees would contribute to the further development of friendly relations between Japan and Kharkiv. The Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Yuliya Svitlychna noted that sakura is the symbol of health and peace and conveyed her eagerness to further develop relations with Japan. In turn, Hennadii Kernes, Kharkiv City Mayor, thanked Japan for the assistance provided and expressed hopes that the sakura avenue laid in the park will be much loved by the citizens.
