Reception on the Occasion of JICA Office Opening

On November 20, Ambassador of Japan Shigeki Sumi held a reception on the occasion of the opening of JICA Office in Ukraine together with the Vice President of JICA Kazuhiko Koshikawa who was on a business trip in Kyiv. Being attended by the First Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv, Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Regional Development, Construction and Communal Services of Ukraine Hennadii Zubko, Head of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group “Ukraine-Japan” Leonid Yemets, Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Yuliya Svitlychna, as well as representatives of local media, the reception became a great success.
At the beginning, Ambassador Sumi said he was happy to inform about the opening of the JICA Office in Ukraine and noted that it was a much awaited event not only for Japan, but Ukraine as well. Vice President Koshikawa explained about JICA’s activity and stressed that the new office would cooperate closely with the Ukrainian government and related parties. In turn, the First Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv said that mutual visits at the highest level were very significant for the development of relations between the two countries, and that Japan's assistance to Ukraine, including ODA loans, was very considerable. The Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Regional Development, Construction and Communal Services of Ukraine Hennadii Zubko said that he was happy to celebrate the opening of the JICA Office in such a short period after the visit of the JICA’s Vice President Shinichi Kitaoka to Kyiv, which took place only six month before. He conveyed his expectations that continued cooperation with JICA would lead to the development of local infrastructure.
At the end, Takaaki Kawano, Senior Director of the Middle East and Europe Department of JICA, who will become the Head of JICA Office in Ukraine, made a presentation devoted to the assistance Japan has so far provided to Ukraine, namely the Project for Development of Boryspil State International Airport, Project for Modernization of Bortnychi Aeration Station and other technical assistance projects, including training courses.
