Ambassador Sumi Participated in the Handover Ceremony of Demining Equipment

On December 12 Ambassador of Japan Shigeki Sumi, together with Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Arsen Avakov, participated in the ceremony to hand over the demining equipment (four rapid reaction pyrotechnic vehicles and four ground-penetrating radar detectors) provided to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
In the conflict area of eastern Ukraine, the number of civilian casualties caused by landmines and explosive remnants has increased, and the buried landmines are hindering the reconstruction of the region. So the equipment was provided to improve the efficiency of demining activities carried out by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
In his speech, Ambassador Sumi said that Japan provides assistance to Ukraine in various areas, and cooperation with the State Emergency Service, National Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs has strengthened through the support Japan has provided for the police reform. Furthermore, Ambassador Sumi expressed hopes that the equipment provided this time would ease the sufferings of the people living in eastern regions.
