Ambassador Sumi visited Sviatohirsk Lavra

On June 19 Ambassador Sumi made his second visit to the Sviatohirsk Lavra in Donetsk region and exchanged views with Archbishop Arsenii whom he has already known.
The monastery, which gained the status of "Lavra" in 2002, is one of the three major Orthodox monasteries in Ukraine alongside the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and Pochaiv Lavra.
During the meeting, Archbishop Arsenii spoke about the orthodox cathedral “Nikolai-do” in Tokyo and how the Sviatohirsk Lavra was suppressed under the communist government. In turn, Ambassador Sumi explained about the persecution of Christians in Japan in the 17th century.
