Ambassador Kurai visited Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant

On May 14 Ambassador Kurai and spouse visited the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and held a meeting with the Acting Director General of SSE “Chornobyl NPP” Serhii Kalashnyk.
During the meeting, Mr. Kalashnyk explained the current state of the New Safe Confinement over the Unit 4 and the Interim Spent Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage Facility (ISF-2) being built with the support of EBRD and donor countries including Japan. The sides also discussed the joint research project which is currently implemented by Japan and Ukraine in the Chornobyl exclusion zone.
Furthermore, Ambassador Kurai and spouse observed the facilities of the nuclear power plant and also visited the town of Pripyat, which became abandoned after its residents were forced to relocate as result of the explosion accident in 1986.
