Ambassador Kurai and spouse visited Donetsk and Luhansk regions

On November 12-13, Ambassador Kurai and spouse visited Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

1. Meetings with the Heads of Donetsk and Luhansk Regional Administrations
     Ambassador Kurai held meetings with the Head of Donetsk Regional State Administration Pavlo Kyrylenko in Kramatorsk and the Head of Luhansk Regional State Administration Serhii Haidai in Sievierodonetsk on November 12 and 13, respectively. The meetings were also attended by the UNHCR and UNICEF representatives.
     Ambassador Kurai was briefed by the regional officials on the current situation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine and he affirmed that Japan would continue to provide support to Ukraine. In turn, the Ukrainian officials expressed their sincere appreciation.

2. Visit to the UNICEF project sites
     On November 12, Ambassador Kurai and spouse visited two sites of the projects being implemented by UNICEF in Donetsk region with the financial support of Japan.
     During the visit to the Kramatorsk Higher Vocational School No.14, they exchanged views with the young people engaged in activities to resolve conflicts among students for the purpose of preventing school violence.
     In Slovyansk, young people, who work on the projects aimed at solving social problems, gave an overview of their activities and received from Ambassador Kurai the equipment that is necessary for the implementation of their projects.

3. Visit to the UNHCR project sites
     On November 13, Ambassador Kurai and spouse visited two sites of the projects being implemented by the UNHCR in Luhansk region with the financial support of Japan. Both of them are close to the contact line that separates the government-controlled area from the occupied territories.
     In Zolote, Ambassador Kurai and spouse talked to the local residents suffering from the conflict who live a difficult life in fear of daily shellings. In Popasna, they visited the houses that were damaged by shellings but then restored with the financial support of Japan. In both places, they were convinced that Japan's support was extremely important for the local people and was received with gratitude.
